The Health & Safety Program Manager with safety and industrial hygiene/chemical process expertise develops, recommends, and implements global programs, policies, and procedures associated with the recognition, measurement, evaluation, and control of potential health and safety hazards.

The positions will work with the Health & Safety COE Memphis Teams, EHS Business Leadership teams, the mill and converting EHS teams to drive the implementation of effective Global EHS compliance and management systems, assure identification and resolution of critical risk items, and monitor and support progress against enterprise initiatives to improve environmental health and safety performance.

Evaluates work activities, designs, develops, implements and recommends safety and health personal protective equipment (PPE) and risk mitigation or abatement controls.

Develops training programs and trainers to ensure effectiveness, consistency, and compliance with mandated EHS training requirements.

May lead, review and approve the investigation of events to determine causation factors and/or improper work/behavioral practices.

Reviews, interprets and may have influence on U.S. federal, state health and safety regulatory and consensus standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DHS, ANSI, NFPA), including regulations on the global stage.

Key Accountabilities:

  • This individual will need to possess and demonstrate: strong leadership skills, adaptability, and strong collaboration and team building skills. The ability to set priorities based on the businesses needs and corporate objectives while working closely with business and EHS leadership will be critical.

  • Provides support to management for H&S activities and internal support to meet corporate H&S goals.

  • Directs the development of H&S guidance and provides recommendations to senior management for the adoption of corporate goals, policies and procedures.

  • Measures and evaluates company performance against key indicators. Identifies trends, emerging issues and develops improvement strategies.

  • Tracks the development of H&S regulations (US and international) and assesses impact on company operations; works with key trade associations on health and safety (e.g., ORC HSE, AF&PA and NCASI).

  • Develops policies and regulatory guidance specific to company operations.

  • Involved in personnel development for site and corporate H&S staff through a coordinated approach of knowledge sharing (i.e., EHSU training, EHS mill calls).

  • Works independently on highly technical assignments (e.g., PSM and industrial hygiene).

  • Maintain contracts with various suppliers and consultants (e.g., industrial hygiene, MSDS/SDS authoring, and air monitoring equipment).

  • Evolving OSHA, EPA and DHS regulations and requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene, chemical or environmental engineering or environmental sciences, or related field.

  • Prefer Master’s degree in the above disciplines

  • Prefer Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification; secondarily, Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification

  • 5 to 10 years work experience in a complex manufacturing environment.

  • Formal and/or experiential knowledge of business and management fundamentals is required.

  • Demonstrated record of success managing multiple projects and initiatives

  • Proficient knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and consensus standards related to industrial hygiene/chemical process safety.

  • Outstanding communication and leadership skills, both verbal and written.

  • The ability to work successfully at all levels of the enterprise, from shop floor through senior management. Must possess confidence, poise and be functionally very competent.

  • Project management skills

  • Must be able to think strategically and to execute and deliver results. A commitment to personal learning and self-development will be important.

  • Experience leading project teams.

  • Knowledge of U.S. EH&S regulations required.

  • Experience applying lean methodologies to EHS processes and improvement initiatives desired.

Organizational Relationship:

  • Reports to the Global Director, Occupational Health & Safety


  • Specific additional responsibilities:

  • Advising and collaborating with management to resolve industrial hygiene/occupational health issues (e.g., chemical, noise, radiation) along with the Manager of Occupational Health.

  • Advising and collaborating with the Product Safety Group in Sustainability/Communications for paper product Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and toxicology expertise for product safety issues and concerns.

  • Advising and collaborating with Global Enterprise Security on the CFATs Chemical Security programs.

  • Advising and collaborating with EHS Audits and the Environment COE on Process Safety Management (PSM), EPA Risk Management Program (RMP) and Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) Chemical Data Reporting (CDR).
