Provide high quality, timely, cost effective counsel and advice to business and staff groups as assigned on all aspects of labor and employment related legal issues.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for timely, proactive advice on a wide range of employment and labor issues.

  • Interpret and analyze laws, regulations, policies and rulings, and assist in the development, implementation and interpretation of appropriate guidelines, policies, and practices.

  • Identify and inform regarding development and trends in labor and employment law; recommend and implement appropriate strategies and responses, including compliance policies and practices.

  • Provide expert and effective representation before various entities, including administrative agencies, collective bargaining representatives, and other parties.

  • Proactively engage clients and other counsel in ongoing efforts to reduce costs and exposure to legal challenges, with the goal of minimizing litigation and administrative challenges.

  • Contribute to achieving legal, business and corporate goals as a proactive member of the legal team and functional partner with other business and specialty counsel.

  • Provide proactive training and education on relevant labor & employment issues and practices to business clients, corporate staff and other attorneys.

  • Select and manage competent, cost effective outside counsel within company guidelines.

  • Work as a positive team member, including with other L&E counsel, other members of the legal department, Human Resources, and business partners.

Key Challenges:

The external environment, including technology, competition, and markets: Must maintain awareness of industry changes, labor developments, political environments, evolving employment and labor legislation.

The internal environment, including interaction with other (both inside and outside the company), policies and practices: Requires a day-to-day interaction with various levels of management, administrative agencies, outside counsel. Must be able to apply internal policies and practices to transactions involving employees and third parties. Must work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an emphasis on results.

The work itself, e.g., problems, opportunities, change: Must maintain awareness of business economics, economic conditions, operational issues, bargaining unit agreements, supply chain management, and vendor and customer relations.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate degree from accredited law school; member in good standing of a state bar and willingness to achieve admission to the State Bar of Tennessee.

  • Seven (7) or more years of employment and/or labor law experience. Employment advice and counsel experience preferred.

  • Must have ability to solve complex legal issues and apply broad principles.

  • Must have current awareness of developments in fields of expertise.

  • Must demonstrate evidence of timely and successful completion of assigned tasks.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with others across disciplines with a focus on leadership and delivery results.

  • Must have capacity to consult with and manage outside counsel.

  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.

  • Must demonstrate evidence of ability to handle multiple priorities and work independently with minimal direction.

  • Must possess the ability and desire to rapidly learn and grow in responsibility.
